Therapies for people with cerebral palsy

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT)

Objective: Enhance the use of a weaker limb.

CIMT is designed to improve the use of the affected limb by restricting the use of the unaffected limb. This intensive therapy encourages individuals to use their weaker hand or arm, promoting neural reorganization and improving function.

Key Components:

  • Immobilization of Unaffected Limb: Prevents reliance on the stronger limb.
  • Intensive Practice: Focused use of the affected limb in daily tasks.
  • Shaping Techniques: Gradually increasing the difficulty of tasks to build strength and coordination.

Additional Therapies

Other therapeutic options include recreational therapy, which uses activities like sports and arts to improve physical and emotional well-being, and sensory integration therapy, which helps individuals process and respond to sensory information more effectively.
